The first time I saw this movie I was 18. John Lasseter and Joe Ranft being so intricately involved in each at once point or another is also fascinating. The relationship between a boy and his…appliances…is a lot less endearing compared to that of a boy and his toys.
I’ve heard it referred to as a “Prototype” of Toy Story, which is a fair assertion. You can definitely see how the ending sequence at the Junkyard may have lead to Cars or even Wall-E (which, I don’t think is a stretch when you see all the Toy Story influences.) Sometimes I feel like it’s a mandatory watch for Pixar employees, (or perhaps staff involved with Toaster inserting their past work into new films.) And, seeing how Toy Story kicked off an entirely new age of cinema (which The Brave Little Toaster was, in itself, once planned to do instead) it’s shocking how little recognition it gets nowadays. Toy Story 3 in particular takes a lot of ideas from here, as does, oddly enough “Toy Story That Time Forgot* having a hell of a lot in common with The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars.īut, you can find bits and pieces of The Brave Little Toaster in all the films. Going all the way up to 4, it’s influence on the Toy Story films is extremely evident. It’s fascinating to watch in conjunction with the Toy Story films.
